Independent Living Skills (Older Children)

Independent living skills help children with autism build confidence, independence, problem-solving abilities, and participation in everyday life. These skills should be taught gradually, using the child’s strengths, communication style, sensory needs, and developmental level. At Dreamweaver Autism Support, we can support families by breaking skills into small steps, creating routines, practicing consistently, and celebrating progress.

We can help by:

  • Building daily independence skills
  • Completing an independence skills assessment
  • Identifying priority skills
  • Creating step-by-step teaching plan
  • Helping parents reduce over-prompting
  • Creating visual supports
  • Practicing skills in the home/community
  • Collaborating with schools and therapists
  • Tracking progress and celebrating independence
