Managing Sensory Needs

Sensory support helps children with autism better understand and respond to information coming from their bodies and environment. Many children with autism experience sensory differences, such as being overly sensitive to sounds, lights, textures, movement, smells, or touch, while others may seek extra sensory input to help them feel calm, focused, and organized. The goal is not to eliminate sensory behaviors, but to understand the child’s needs and provide support that helps them participate, communicate, learn, and feel regulated.

At Dreamweaver Autism Support, we help families to:

  • Create a sensory friendly environment
  • Keep a sensory journal
  • Identify patterns and triggers
  • Teach the child to recognize their own needs
  • Provide appropriate sensory choices, including holistic approaches
  • Work with occupational therapists when needed
